current statement.
I spend most of my time striving to communicate in one way or another. Like knocking on sound-proof glass, looking on to a life that is always out of reach - trying to make contact with other human Beings and with the world we are all born into and, if like me, seem to be perpetually lost and bewildered whilst inhabiting. Painting is a way for me to endeavour to make sense of the unknown. The process seems to initiate a state of heightened intensity as if, whilst tackling the problems commonly associated with composition and the transcribing of illusionary, three dimensional space on to a flat surface or support, one is using a particular part of the brain. A metaphor I like to imagine is that of when a musician walks up to a stage and to a piano, for instance - there is a moment when they change their focus into a performance state, and the audience is aware of this change. We all have an unconscious awareness of it. Another metaphor perhaps? ; Tolkien's Frodo Baggins puts on the ring for the first time and is transported into a state of total and terrible truth. |
